Great Surfing Watch
Over my 40 years of surfing, I've tried various surfer brand watches, mostly tide models, with some in the $200 range. Among them, my favorites have been the Freestyle watches, especially the Shark Tide, which stands out as the best tide and surf watch I've experienced. However, the Casio Unisex MRW200H-4BV, despite not featuring tide functions, has a less conspicuous surf look that I've come to appreciate, often receiving compliments for its understated style despite its lower price point.
For the past 18 months, this Casio watch has been my constant companion, accompanying me on my weekly surf sessions and beyond. Its durability and water resistance have impressed me, as well as its lightweight design. Notably, it fits comfortably under a wetsuit sleeve due to its moderate size. The crystal remains unscathed by sand or any other activities I engage in outside of surfing. The minor inconveniences are the date adjustment for months with fewer than 31 days and a sometimes stiff bezel, but these are minor issues considering the watch's affordability. And should it ever get lost, its cost-effectiveness means I can easily replace it without a second thought.
Absolutely the Best Watch in the World for the Money
The title is not hyperbole; this watch really is quite literally the very best watch in the world for the money. Let's do a quick run-down of its features:
1. Tells time
2. Tells day
3. Tells date
4. Water resistant to 100m (330 feet)
5. Solid plastic/rubber construction
6. Glow in the dark dial and numbers
We'll take it by the numbers.
1. Tells time. This is the minimum that this watch should do. In my experience, it tells time as accurately as my Citizen and Seiko watches that cost hundreds of dollars more.
2. Tells day. This is a big deal. This watch actually tells you what day of the week it is. It may not sound like a big deal, but when you get older, this is a very important feature.
3. Tells date. Most watches of some quality will do this, but to do so with the day as well? In a watch this inexpensive? Holy calendars, Batman, this watch does BOTH!
4. Water resistant to 100m. Unless you're Jaques Cousteau, you're not going to find yourself alive 100m below the surface of the water. This watch will still be ticking even if you drop it into the lake or swimming pool, or if you take a swim with the fishes under the pier. If it's the latter, at least you can look at the watch and know the time of your demise.
5. Solid plastic and rubber construction. This is a good deal. Why? Because it weighs so little, you don't feel it's on your wrist. It's also a nice matte finish which is quite stylish these days.
6. Glow in the dark dial and hands. This is a great thing. In my experience, it glows bright and long after a light source threw some photons at it. What's better is in the scenario above, where the watch wearer finds himself swimming with the fishes under the pier, if it's dark, the glow in the dark dial and hands will aid and assist in visibility if it's dark (and water gets dark the deeper you get).
To sum it up, for the price, you cannot get a better quality watch with this many features. I tried. I looked for days and days, and while there are cheaper watches out there, they cannot match the quality or the features.Trust me, this is the best deal in time/day/date telling wrist-wear.
Final comment: I've worn expensive watches all my life, and when I had to put them all into the watch hospital for repair, I bought this watch so that I can at least tell time. Do you know what happened? More people noticed this watch and commented on its awesomeness than they did when I wore my much nicer and more expensive watches. Not that I wear my watches to get comments, but if I did, this one would have been a much better return on my money than the others.
I hope this review helps. Bottom line: if you need a watch that does it all for under $20 and will last and last, then buy this watch. If you want to throw money away, then look elsewhere. This might very well be the best deal in the universe.
I was surprised... now your turn.
First, let’s put things in context: I paid just $31 for this watch. This isn’t a Rolex or any other premium brand, and I knew that when I ordered it. But when it arrived, my first impressions were mixed. The watch was smaller than I expected and less metallic than I’d imagined based on the pictures. At first glance, it felt like a cheap watch for a cheap price. But then I put it on my wrist, it started to make sense. The Casio MRW-200HD wears much smaller than its advertised size. Although some sellers claim it’s a bold 43mm, it feels more like a 38mm on the wrist. That’s not a bad thing. This understated size is what makes it such a surprising gem.As someone who typically gravitates toward large-faced watches, I was skeptical. But this watch taught me an important lesson: smaller can be just as impressive. It sits comfortably, looks sleek, and transitions well between casual and semi-formal settings. If you’re someone considering classical watches, the MRW-200HD is the perfect stepping stone. It offers an accessible entry point into appreciating the versatility and charm of more understated timepieces. That started as a $31 gamble ended with me reevaluating my preferences. No, it’s not a premium watch, but it doesn’t need to be. The Casio MRW-200HD-78VCF is proof that good things can come in small packages, and you don’t need a 44mm+ watch to make a statement. I will recommend this watch any day. Just experience the size and fit for a very affordable price, you will be surprised.
Perfect beater watch
I have been trying to find a cheap beater watch for a while now but just couldn’t find the right one. I’m also not really in to digitals and prefer an analog watch and I like the tactical look of this one. I never tried this one because I thought it would be a litter too big for my 6.5” wrist but I decided to give it a try and it actually fits me pretty well. For watches with dive bezels, 42mm is usually my max but this watch is only a little larger at 43mm and has a smaller dial so it wears more like a 41 or 42mm. I also like the thinness and it isn’t slab sided or bulky. The 100 meter WR is great so I wouldn’t be worried about swimming with it. It has everything you would want in an inexpensive beater watch and has even been used by NASA which gives it some credibility and boosts up the cool factor. There are a couple negatives though; like every Casio I have owned, the strap is way too long for me so I got a cheap elastic strap which fits better and is much more comfortable. Also the lume sucks but I can live with that for a $20 watch. Overall I would recommend it, and if you have smaller wrists don’t be put off by the larger dimensions and give it a try.
Overcame the defective calendar. *Final Update 3/12/15
This watch is built dirt-cheap. I expected that much from a $18 watch. I was still disappointed, because I was under the impression Casio was above this. Honestly, if it broke before the month is over, it would not surprise me any.
While I didn't like the cheap build, I'm not gonna lie, I really liked the look of this watch, especially considering the price. It is also the easiest of the analog watches to tell time.
I did come close to giving this watch a one star. After I had already placed the order for the watch, I noticed some one star reviews noting the defective calendar dial. I didn't worry much, considering how few one star reviews this watch actually had on Amazon. I got mine delivered just today, and indeed, my 'day' setting was stuck & would not move. As I set everything else, I kept playing with it. Turning the crown slow, fast, slow while pressuring the crown in-out-up-down, you get the idea. Behold, it did start to show some movement, so I kept playing with it.
After I spun that crown couple hundred times or so, really fast, the dial became unstuck. It is functioning perfectly now.
P.S. Watch I received is "JAPAN MOV'T", "CASED IN CHINA".
***UPDATE*** 2/8/13
I really like this watch. It is the cheapest watch I own, but I wear this one almost everyday. It has performed perfectly, and it has been highly accurate as well. I got it in September, it's February now. If it's still this good next September, I'm gonna have to give it five stars.
***UPDATE2*** 9/27/13
As promised, I'm bumping it from 3 to 5 stars. Not that I've put it thru a torture test, but it has performed perfectly as a daily wear watch thru some exposure to water(never submerged though), and plenty of tossing & bumping around. I got more than my money's worth.
***UPDATE3*** 12/8/14
Still performing perfectly, even after 2+ years. Keeps very accurate time, too. My first impression of this watch was dead wrong.
***FINAL UPDATE*** 3/12/15
I originally purchased this watch knowing that its design borrowed heavily from the Luminox Navy SEAL watch. I finally bought that Luminox couple of months ago when I misplaced this Casio. I've found the Casio since, but I no longer wear it for obvious reasons, so this would be the last update of my review. I guess I used this watch for nearly 2.5 years, and other than the defective calendar dial I wrestled with at the start, it's been 100% problem free. Even the band/strap's still in perfect shape, and is powered by the original battery it came with. Well done, Casio. :)
Good for High School Student
I'm a student and I needed a watch that would not break on me during SATs and ACTs so I could time myself. I finally found this watch and I was a little skeptical but it is a great watch.
It fitted my wrist even though my wrist is small. I don't know if it can fit someone with a big wrist without strangling your blood flow. And by small I mean my wrist's circumference is roughly 5-6 inches around. I don't think it would fit anyone whose wrist is bigger than 8 inches around. Don't know the exact measurements but that's a rough estimate.
First things first: the glow in the dark paint works on all of them however low intensity lights will not light up the paint too much for it to obviously and visibly show up in the dark. Otherwise it will just be little dim if anything. If your eyes adjust to the dark then you might be able to see it better. If you work in photoshoots or something that exposes you to high lumens of light then yes it will glow... very obviously. I shone a 10 lumens flashlight on it and it was visibly glowing even in the lit room. The numbers don't glow so unless you have a clock face memorized, it won't help you much in telling specific time. The glow in the dark paint lasts a while because I have went to sleep at midnight, wake up four hours later, and check the watch and my eyes can still see somewhat of a faint glow on the dark.
The set up is a little confusing if you don't check what model your watch is. it should be on the back of the watch on the battery case/cover. It may/may not be squared/boxed in. My watch model was 5125 and I could set the time correctly.
If you are a little obsessive like I am, the seconds part will kinda tick you off. When you adjust the watch, the second hand going to move slightly no matter what direction you turn it in. And that slight movement may cause your second hand to land in between the seconds like mine did. It's easily fixable but annoying. you'll just have to readjust again but carefully this time.
There is no alarm nor is there a beep. However if you put your ear on the watch's glass, you can hear ticking but it's not audible if you are more than an inch away from it
The day and day of the week showed up fine and what I like is that there is a Spanish and English version for the days of the week. It's easy setting those up and they stay in the language you want although if it changed, I wouldn't have mind since I can read Spanish anyways. However, you will have to manually adjust the day if the month ends on anything other than a 31. Example: February going into March, you will have to skip from 28 or 29 to 1.
This watch is water resistant and NOT water PROOF so don't take it scuba diving or whatnot. I don't plan on taking this into the pool or shower so I don't see a problem there. The occasional hand washing won't kill this thing however mixing it with soap and other cleaners might. The bottom line: don't get it wet.
Overall, I like the simple layout. The numbers are easy to read and aren't the crazily small numbers or the Roman numerals. It's more of a functional watch than the those decorative ones without a watch face.
The second hand should have been a different color other than the blue and white. The color scheme works fine with the hour and minute hand because you can see then clearly against the black but the second hand tip kinda blends on the color of the numbers so it is a little hard to tell to the second what it is some times. You can still kinda tell but it is still a little confusing at times.
I also like how there are military hours in smaller print below the numbers. There is 13-24 below and it's useful for those who need things in military time. There is not however a 00:00 on there although you should know that it's midnight and midnight is at 12.
The glass seems a little flimsy and maybe prone to fingerprint smudges but a shirt edge can clean it pretty easily. Scratches on the other hand is a different story. I've had it for roughly a month and a half and I would accidentally scrape by things and it'll get scratches on it :(
As for the strap it seems sturdy. However it's the hinge thing that worries me because it seems to made of a plastic and after extended time, it'll probably break.
Also, the crown will seem kind of loose if you are not currently using it to set anything. I don't know if that's what it's suppose to be like but I can tell you right now, it doesn't feel like it'll fall off because it's not wobbly or dangling precariously from the things holding it in.
But I liked it, good watch at a cheap price. Good watch for a high school student. I'm satisfied because it wasn't overly complicated and it's easy to read
